1. Experience The Flaming Waters, Lake Bogoria.
Enjoy thousands of flamingos – in ideal conditions, up to two million – routinely gather in the shallows of Lake Bogoria. Viewed from the soda-encrusted shore, it’s a compelling spectacle as several hundred might rise above the general squawk and chatter to reveal, in flight, the harmony of bright pink, black–fringed underwings The full scale of the phenomenon is apparent from the surrounding cliffs, the individual birds blending into a shimmering pink band that separated the alkaline water from its bleached rim.

3. Mzima Springs, Tsavo West
The clear stream at Mzima Springs in Tsavo West forms two large palm-shaded pools, connected by rapids. Crocodiles patrol the lower one; the upper is a hippo wallow, where an underwater viewing chamber has been built where you’ll have the first view of hippos ‘ below-the-surface antics.
4. Enjoy Elephants, at Amboseli National Park.
Although the number of elephants at Amboseli is not as big as in some other parks in Africa, the openness of the savannah at this park and the relative safety that these precious pachyderms have enjoyed for years, mean that they are relatively approachable than anywhere else in Africa. Watch as these huge creatures amble through the African bush and gather in large numbers around the waterhole, or stay at one of the lodges in the park and view them from your room balcony.
5. Feed the Giraffes, Giraffe Centre, Kenya
If you’re only in Nairobi for a short while and a safari is out of the question, then a visit to the Giraffe center (in the suburb of Karen, 10 km from the city Centre) is an experience that you ought to have. Here, there’s a platform for feeding which enables you to take a few ‘close-up’ snaps. There’s also the Nairobi national park, a protected area closer to the city where giraffes, impalas, zebras, and rhinos graze against a dramatic skyscraper backdrop in the distance. It’s a surreal experience to say the least.
