Experience Mombasa City Tour, Kenya
From Mombasa Old Town to Bamburi Nature, there are a variety of interesting tourist attractions on Mombasa Island to suit your perfect day tour. The day starts with a visit to Fort Jesus, which overlooks the entrance to the old Port of Mombasa and was founded by the Portuguese in 1593 to protect the port and their trade route to India. It has a tumultuous history of civil wars between ruling Arab dynasties. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with well-preserved Portuguese military fortifications from the 16th century. It is now a museum with many archeological finds.
Proceed to Mombasa Old Town, where you can walk through the narrow streets and visit the old harbor, where you will see old Arabic boats and one of the oldest mosques, Mahindry, which is located near the old harbor. Visit the nearby Makupa market to learn about food spices and vegetables while meeting different traders who are buying and selling various products. After exploring the market, you can have a taste of the local cuisine by getting lunch in Old Town or any other location of your choosing, as Mombasa is rich in food culture, including Continental, Asian, Arabic, and African cuisine.
After lunch, visit Bombolulu Workshop, a nonprofit organization that empowers people with disabilities to create crafts for both domestic and international markets, including jewelry, tailored products, wood, casting, and leather pieces. You’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the Bamburi Nature Trails and Haller Park, where you can feed the giraffes, see the crocodiles, and watch hippos being fed, before retiring to your hotel or exploring the island nightlife.
