Experience Nairobi National Park, Kenya
Nairobi National Park is a major tourist attraction in Nairobi and the crown jewel of Kenya’s conservation efforts. The park is just 117 square kilometers in area and is just 10 kilometers from the city center. It is the world’s oldest park, dating back to 1946, and the only protected area with a diverse range of animals and birds so close to a capital city.
With lion-gold plains, acacia-fringed valleys, leopard-stalked cliffs, plunging gorges, and muddy hippo pools, this versatile park hosts its own wildebeest migration and is the only location on the planet where black rhino graze against the silhouettes of office blocks and skyscrapers in Nairobi. The impala observation point, located a few minutes from the main gate and featuring a stone-built rondavel with panoramic views and a picnic area, is one of the optional activities available at this park. The ivory burning site, where Kenya’s late former president Daniel Arap Moi set fire to 12 tons of ivory in a bid to end the mass slaughter of Africa’s elephants in 1989, is also near to the park, as is the Nairobi safari walk, which is located just before and to the right of the park’s main gate. It provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see various animals behaving as they would in their natural environment while walking along elevated timbered boardwalks for an educational and enjoyable outing.
