Experience Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya
Lake Nakuru National Park is a year-round destination that provides a safe refuge for a large number of native African species, including the Endangered Black Rhino, as well as bird watching opportunities. Waterbucks, Warthogs, Impalas, Rothschild Giraffes, Eland, White Rhinos, and Lions can also be seen at this park.
This park is located in the Great Rift Valley, about 156 kilometers from Nairobi, and it spans an area of 180 kilometers squared, with the Lake covering roughly a third of the park’s surface. The thick bloom of the blue-green Cyanophyte Spirulina Platensis, which is a source of food for flamingos, used to make this park so unique, but due to increased precipitation levels at the park in recent years, the alkalinity level of the lake has decreased, decreasing the algae content, which is the source food for the flamingos.
As a result, the bulk of Lake Nakuru’s resident flamingos have relocated to nearby Lake Bogoria in Kenya and Lake Natron in Tanzania. To date, tourists to Lake Nakuru can only see flamingos during the dry months of January and March, but this is not a guaranteed experience.
