The two most important sites of cultural interest on Mombasa Island are Fort Jesus and the Old Town. While Fort Jesus (a massive and gigantic fort built by the Portuguese in 1593-1596) showcases Portuguese military power and struggle to take over and control the island of Mombasa, the Old Town on the other hand feature carved door that dates back over 100 years offering Arabic and Indian experience by the look of the door and fine wooden balconies. The Old Town is predominantly Muslim and so there are several fine old mosque within the historic quarter and you’ll see that many of the inhabitants wear Muslim dress.
Other listed building and areas of interest within Old Town include: Africa Hotel (one of the first hotels in Mombasa), Mandhry Mosque, The Old Post Office, Swahili Cultural Centre and Lookmanji Curio Shop.
