Experience Meru National Park, Kenya
Meru National Park is best known for being the setting of Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free,” which tells the story of Adamson’s life and study among lions and cheetahs. The lioness “Elsa” was the most famous, and her grave is marked here. The park occupies 870 km2 and is located directly on the equator at an altitude of 1000-3400 feet. Its natural scenery is varied, ranging from wide-open plains with meandering riverbanks dotted with doum palms to woodlands on the Nyambeni mountain ranges, northeast of Mount Kenya.
Elephants, Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Black Rhinos, Zebras, Gazelles, Oryx, and some rarer antelope such as Lesser Kudu, Duiker, and Dik Dik, a tiny African antelope that stands just twelve inches tall and is famously shy, can all be seen in this park. At this park, you can see large pride of lions and African buffalo. Red-necked falcon, Heuglin’s courser, brown-backed woodpecker, sunbirds Peter’s Finfoot, inhabiting the Murera and Ura Rivers; Pel’s Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings, and weavers are among the 300 species of birds reported.
